ABOUT CLEAN UP THE KIMBERLEY

Clean Up the Kimberley Campaign

The Kimberley region of far north Western Australia is a vast and ancient land where the indigenous culture is still going strong. The spectacular and lonely landscape is rapidly changing as tourism becomes one of the main local industries.

With only a minimal waste management infrastructure in remote areas, coping with this new influx of visitors presents a challenge.

Ten years ago only the very adventurous came to the Kimberley. Now with international flights and more tour operators, the region has opened up and is accessible to almost anyone.

More remote and untouched areas are being frequented both inland and on the coast and people often find it difficult to stow their waste and bring it back to town. As a result, more and more rubbish is being left behind.

The Clean Up the Kimberley campaign is broken down into a series of community action based projects, designed and implemented by Clean Up Australia that aims to enhance and promote the environmental, social and economic sustainability in the Kimberley region by managing existing waste management infrastructure facilities and teaching visitors and locals to how to minimise their waste.

Now one of Clean Up Australia's major campaign initiatives, Clean Up the Kimberley is a long term strategy carefully designed for remote and regional areas. The four main projects which make up the campaign are now well underway and achieving great results.

The Kimberley under pressure

If the Kimberley is to maintain its natural and cultural heritage, steps need to be taken now to change the behaviour and attitudes of locals and visitors.
